Description
Stacking the breath, grounding the body, and Tonal Resonance!
:
Flutists here are two great exercises for the flute and your instrument (your body is your instrument!) notes/tips below. Enjoy!
:
Stacking the breath (here's what to focus on).
Inhale/exhale: catch micro breaths between note clusters aiming for very silent breaths and for a precise amount of air intake enough to energize the following cluster plus stack into the lungs as you progress for full lung capacity. Super challenging! If you find the sound of the breath noticeable relax the tongue/open up the oral cavity, modulate the amount of air you're taking in and the speed of the intake. It can take time to develop a good bio feedback sense of the inner dimensions of your lungs and how much to inhale for each note cluster and for stacking of the breath so that you reach full capacity by X number of times. Be patient. Be present!
:
Resonance and Grounding: Establish a good bio-feedback sensation of the resonance placement for the bottom note (notice vibration in face and thoracic region), keep your knees 'spongy', do a posterior pelvic tilt (so engage the psoas muscle and muscles of the pelvis/abdominal wall: tilt your sitz bones slightly forward). Allow the breath, follow the breath, be present with the breath as it makes its pass up and down the note 'splashes' of the flute; maintain the first position you find everywhere in your body except in the oral cavity and lip area: here you'll want to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the higher notes) and ready to return to the starting note position.
