I react to the song “Biljana platno belese” (translated as “Biljana was bleaching linen”) a traditional folk ballad from the Vardar Macedonia region, beautifully revitalized by Jovana Bogdanoska. It tells the story of young Biljana sitting at the springs of Lake Ohrid to bleach her linens—presumably her wedding dowry—when a caravan of vintners, captivated by her beauty, approaches. Although they offer to pay for any linen they tread upon with wine or rakija, Biljana declines, instead confessing her affection for the handsome carriage driver leading the caravan.
