*1969 version* here:

This was actually the second song that I ever posted on the channel, back in November 2001. However that was a very short version so here’s the full song, with chords/tab.

Some Songfacts insight:

In 1962, Dylan visited England for the first time. Here, he met many local folk artists, including Martin Carthy, who introduced Dylan to many traditional English ballads, including ‘Scarborough Fair’.

Dylan would lift the line "Remember me to one who lives there/She once was a true love of mine" from this ballad for ‘Girl From The North Country’.

Some personal insight:

My wife and I opened a show for Martin Carthy (and the brilliant Dave Swarbrick) a few years back - at the Electric Palace Theatre in Bridport, UK. That was September 4th 2010. He’s a really lovely guy - so down to earth. Superb guitar player. That was a great night.

*Picking*
This was one of Dylan’s favourite Travis picking patterns during the early 60’s. It appears a lot in his work. The G to G/C change is also a brilliant Dylan standard.

Travis picking requires that two core bass notes for each chord are played consecutively and continually. In this case ALWAYS 4th and 6th strings.

The treble strings are played more sporadically and are used as fills. As long as those bass notes are being hit in time, it often doesn’t matter what the treble strings do - always sounds good.

Sometimes he plays three Gs at the end of a verse…sometimes only two.

*Verse 3 transition*
The break between verses 3 and 4 is slightly different as he goes back to the D9:

G
G/C (3-x-2-0-1-0)
G
D9
G

G

….and back into verse arrangement

There are five verses and an instrumental break in the original.

Note that on the album he ends with the D9 break.

Enjoy :0)
