00:00 Non e Gran Cousa
Based upon a melody contained in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which was commissioned and compiled by King Alfonso X (1221-1284)of Castile (modern day Portugal). The collection contains over 400 pieces of poetry and music, and is dedicated to Holy Mary.

02:38 Kyrie Orbis Factor
A sacred plain chant contained within the Fontevraud Gradual, which was likely produced in Paris in approximately the year 1250. It was owned by, and got its name from, Eleanor of Brittany, the abbess of Fontevraud Abbey. The gradual contains sacred music, as well as original compositions, including several early polyphonic pieces for two voices.

05:41 Kalenda maia
Based upon a piece originally composed by troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras (1155-1205). Vaqueiras himself is said to have based the piece upon a song he heard in an Italian court. The original lyrics he composed, in typical troubadour fashion, deal with unrequited love.

08:38 Te Deum Laudamus
A sacred plain chant typically sung on occasions of rejoicing. This piece is attributed to Nicetas, bishop of Remesiana in the early 5th century.

12:43 Ja Nus Hons Pris
Based upon a work composed by Richard the Lionheart, King of England(1157-1199). The title translates from Occitan as “No Man Who is Imprisoned”, and was composed while he was being held prisoner by Leopold V, Duke of Austria, who managed to capture him as he was returning from the third crusade.

15:33 Dum Pater Familias
Based upon a 12th century liturgical chant contained within the Codex Calixtinus, which details the information needed to complete El Camino de Santiago, which was the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

18:29 Palästinalied
Based upon a work by german lyric poet Walther von der Vogelweide (1170-1230), which was composed during, and about, the fifth crusade (1217-1221). This piece was itself a contrafactum of Jaufré Rudel’s piece Lanquan li Jorn son Lonc en May (see below). The lyrics depict the gospel from the eyes of a pilgrim first setting foot in the holy land.

22:04 Lanquan li Jorn son Lonc en May
Originally composed by troubadour Jaufré Rudel, prince of Blaye. His birth year is unknown, but he likely died during the second crusade, in or around the year of 1147. The song deals with the typical troubadour topics of unrequited love from afar.

25:32 Tempus est Iocundum
Based upon a love song from the Carmina Burana, an 11th-13th century manuscript of secular songs and poetry.

28:00 Estampie
This piece is adapted from the Robertsbridge Codex, a 14th century manuscript (presumed to be from around the year 1330) which contains some of the oldest surviving music written specifically for the keyboard.

30:35 Mirie it is while sumer ilast
The work this piece is based upon is the earliest known surviving secular song written in the english language (mid 13th century). It was preserved somewhat accidentally, as it was discovered written on a scrap of paper and tucked inside a totally unrelated book.

33:10 Ai vist lo lop
Based upon a 13th century traditional occitan song. The original lyrics depict a fox, a wolf, and a rabbit dancing around and consuming crops, leaving the singer with nothing. It is believed that the song is meant to be a commentary on the King, the Lords, and the church, all of which collected taxes and left the peasant populations with little to survive on.
