Maveli, also known as Mahabali, is a legendary king in Kerala's folklore, celebrated during the festival of Onam. He was a wise and just ruler, beloved by his people for his fair governance, generosity, and commitment to equality. According to legend, Mahabali's reign was a time of peace, prosperity, and happiness, with people living in harmony and without poverty or suffering. His rule became so perfect that it threatened the supremacy of the gods.

In Hindu mythology, this story is linked to Vishnu's fifth avatar, Vamana. The gods, feeling envious of Mahabali's popularity, appealed to Vishnu, who took the form of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana. Vamana approached Mahabali and humbly requested three paces of land. Known for his generosity, Mahabali granted the request. However, Vamana grew to an enormous size, covering the earth and heavens with two steps. For the third step, Mahabali offered his own head, which Vamana accepted, pushing him down to the underworld.

Impressed by Mahabali’s devotion and humility, Vishnu granted him permission to return to his land and visit his people once a year. This visit marks the festival of Onam, celebrated as a joyous homecoming of their beloved king. The festival embodies themes of unity, equality, and prosperity, honoring Mahabali’s legendary reign.
